Mgarimbe, real name Nkosinathi Mfeka, will be conferred with a honourary doctorate by the University of Limpopo for giving South Africa the hit song Sista Bettina.
According to a source close to the university leadership, the decision was taken early this year to honour the artist
“They all agree that Mgarimbe has done something no artist has done in Africa. Sista Bettina was produced in 2006 but it remains the only song that makes everyone hit the dance floor when it plays. The university took a very progressive decision,” said our source.
When approached for a comment Mgarimbe appeared to have mixed feelings about the honour. “Look mfowethu, I am happy about this whole thing but it saddens me that it took more than 10 years for someone to finally wake up and acknowledge that Sista Bettina is a masterpiece. This song is bigger than Michael Jackson’s Thriller,” said Mgarimbe.
“I have never won any award in South Africa but every year we see unknown songs walk away with awards. People like us who don’t have money to buy awards will never be recognised. I salute University of Limpopo for wanting to make me Dr Mgarimbe,” added the talented artist.
Attempts to get confirmation from the university did not yield any results.
